What are Karma Heroes?

Karma Yoga is the yoga of action. Karma Heroes are organizations that apply yogic principles like compassion, strength and mindfulness, to do good in the world. Below are some of my favorites. What are yours?

Courageous Women, Fearless Living –

Every summer, this annual five-day retreat creates a healing environment that supports and empowers women touched by cancer. It brings together integrative medicine, yoga, mindfulness practice, healing meditations, art, ritual and more. This is an incredible program I attend yearly to renew my spirit. And I highly recommend it to any woman experiencing a cancer diagnosis and navigating life afterward.

Foundation for Living Beauty

The Foundation for Living Beauty provides support services to women living with cancer. They function as an activity and service-oriented organization dedicated to uplifting the lives of women living with cancer and cancer survivors. They have amazing programs that include wellness retreats, educational workshops, and support events. If you have a chance, treat yourself to yoga with my friend and fellow yoga therapist, Sharon Holly.

California Wildlife Center
– cawildlife.org

Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of Southern California’s sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. This is a great organization to contact if you encounter an animal in need of help. They are supported by state-of-the-art animal care and rehabilitation facilities and a cadre of professionally-trained staff. And they also have a great annual Wild Brunch for the whole family!

Imerman Angels
– imermanangels.org

Founded by a young cancer survivor, Imerman Angels partners anyone seeking cancer support with someone just like you – a “Mentor Angel”. A Mentor Angel is a cancer survivor or survivor’s caregiver who is the same age, same gender, and most importantly who has faced the same type of cancer. This service is absolutely free and helps anyone living anywhere in the world.

Breast Cancer Action

This group emphasizes advocacy and education. They created the “Think Before You Pink” campaign which looks at who really benefits from all the pink ribbon products and promotions? Hint: not cancer patients. Learn more here.
